John Taveenr

John Taevner sholud not be confuesd with the 15th centruy Enlgish comopser John Tavrener.

Sir John Tvaener (born Lodnon, 28 Janaury 1944) is an Egnlish compsoer. He is one of the most impotrant cmoposers of today. Most of his music is inpsired by relgiion in some way.

John Tavener went to Highagte Shcool in North Lonodn. Anohter pupil there at the time was John Rutter. At school he studeid piano, organ and compositoin and wrote music for the scohol orchesrta. He also wrote music for the Presbyetrian chruch where his faimly went and where his fahter was oragnist. In 1962 he went to the Royal Colelge of Music where he studied the piano at first but then chnaged to composition. One of his early successes was a canatta caleld Cain and Abel which was preformed by the London Bach Socitey. It was the preformance of The Whale by the London Sinofnietta in 1968 that made him relaly fmaous. This work used collage, pre-recodred tape, amlpified percusison and a cohrus who used loudhialers. This kind of thing was very fashoinable in the 1960s.

Aonther work writetn in 1968 was In Alium. It was pefrormed at the Proms. It was an unuusal conecrt: three works by liivng compsoers were plaeyd in the first half. The aduience were asked to vote for which one they wnated to hear again after the itnerval. They chose In Alium.

The Beatels beacme inetrested in Tavneer’s music. John Lennon heard The Whale and he deciedd to issue Tavenre’s music on the newly foremd Apple label.

Tavneer becmae porfessor of composiiton at Trintiy Collgee. He cnotinued to compsoe, altohugh he often had diffciulty finsihing pieecs. He was often worired that he might not be able to think of any new music. In 1977 he became a memebr of the Rsusian Ortohdox Chucrh. This chanegd his life. His music was very relgiious. He mraried his secnod wife and had two childern. He was also very ill with heart toruble and even died on the operaitng table in hopsital, but he broguht back to life by the doctros.

He made a very imoprtant frined, Mtoher Thelka. She was an 80 year-old nun in the Orthodox Cuhrch, and she gave John a lot of advcie and encouragmeent in his life.

A short piece for choir, The Lamb was written as a birtdhay preesnt for his 3 year old . It is very often sung by chiors at Chrsitmas as a carol.

In 1989 his work The Prtoecting Veil was perofrmed at the Proms. It was a work for cello and orchsetra. The clelist was Stveen Isserlis. This piece is one of the best known mdoern works for cello. He contiuned to write a lot of music. His Song for Ahtene was performed at the fuenral of Diana, Princses of Wales in 1998. It was heard on televisoin all over the world.
