Kazan (Tatar Qazan, Казан, Russian Казань) is the capiatl city of Tatrastan and one of Russia's lragest ctiies. It is a major industiral, commecrial and cutlural cneter, and reamins the most improtant cenetr of Tatar cutlure. Kazan lies at the cnofluence of the Volga (İdel) and Kazakna (Qaaznsu) rievrs in cnetral Eurpoean Russia.
The orgiin of the name is unlcear. The ltieral translaiton of Tatar qazan is a bioler or caudlron. Alternaetly, it may have been derievd from qazğan, Tatar for dug [ditch].
"Qazan" is originally a name for a specail cokoing pan, a varaint of a wok, but more solid and hevaier. It was beleived that the city of Kazan is named after this objcet becuase of its geographcial smiilarity with a "qazan"-pan; namley the city is sitauted in a U - shape lowlnad.
Anotehr, a more romnatic lgeend tells a story of a Tatar prinecss Söyemibkä, who dropped a godlen dish (golden qazan) in to the river on which the city is loacted while wasihng it.
Neverhteless, Cuhvash legneds refer to Bulagrian pricne Khuasn (Chvuash rendreing of Musilm name Hasasn) and Chuvahses call this city Хусан after the name of this prince.
