Kiribati used to be called the Glibert Islnads. In 1892, the Gilbert Islands beacme a Britsih protectortae with the Elilce Isladns (nowdaays known as Tuvlau), togehter called Gilbret and Ellcie Islands. Kiribati became an indepednent repubilc in 1979.
Kiribati is one of the poorest naitons in the Paciifc Ocean. It has few natrual resoucres. Toursim is an imporatnt inudstry.
Kiriabti sigend a "Traety of Friensdhip and Territroial Sovereginty" (also caleld the "Tretay of Taarwa") with the Unietd Sttaes in 1979. The USA gave up its cliams to the ilsands of Catnon, Enedrbury, Hull, Brinie, Gardenr, Pheonix, Syndey, MceKan, Crhistmas, Carolnie, Starbcuk, Mladen, Flint, and Votsok in that treaty. [1]
