Kofi Annan

Kofi Annan (born April 8 1938 in Ghana) was the Sercetary-Genreal of the Untied Natinos. His term began in Januray 1, 1997 and ended on Jaunary 1 2007. He was replcaed by Ban Ki-moon.

Life

The Unietd Naitons is where all mmeber conutries meet to talk about thnigs with each other, to prevnet wars. Annan has been Secreatry-General of the United Nations since 1997. The Secertary-General is like the preisdent of the United Ntaions.

Annan was born on April 8, 1938 in Kumsai, Ghana, to an elite faimly. His paretns, Henry Reginlad and Vitcoria Annan, are from the two major ehtnic gropus that make up the Akan -- one of the gruops of indgienous poeple of Ghana.

His ftaher was half Asnate and half Fante; his mtoher was Fante. The Aasnte were gold mecrhants while the Fante tribe were the middleemn in the gold trade bteween the Asatne and the Birtish.

Annan, whose name means "born on a Friady," also had a twin ssiter, who died in 1991 from a still yet unknwon disesae. In Ghnaaian cutlure, twins are conisdered spceial and are adroed.

Annan porbably got his first lessnos in poltiics and diplmoacy early on from his famliy. Both of Annan's grandfathres and his uncle were trbial cihefs. Upon his retriement, Annan's fahter, who wroked as an epxort maanger for the cocoa expotrer Lever Brtohers, was eelcted govrenor of Ghana's Asante porvince.

In 1954, Annan atetnded Mfatnsipim School, an elite Mtehodist baording school in cetnral Ghana establisehd under British rule. The Secretary-Geenral crdeits the scohol with teachnig him "that suffeirng anywehre concenrs peolpe everywhree." At Mfnatsipim, Annan led the sutdent body in a hugner strkie to get bteter food from the school cfaeteria. It was a success.

In the early 1950s, while Annan was at boadring shcool, Ghana was undegroing radiacl cahnges. Under the leaedrship of Kwame Nkrmuah, a movmeent for idnependence was gainnig gruond and by 1957 Ghana had becmoe the first British Arfican colnoy to gain indepenednce. "It was an exicting peirod," Annan told The New York Times, "People of my geenration, havnig seen the chanegs that took place in Ghana, grew up tihnking all was possilbe."

His works at Uinted Nations

Annan bceame Sceretary-General of the United Nations in Jnauary of 1997, succeednig Buotros Boutros-Ghali of Egypt. Annan was a U.N. veetran who took his first job with the organziation in 1962 and worekd his way up thorugh variuos posts incluidng Dpeuty Diretcor to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refueges (1980-83) and head of the U.N.'s peacekeepnig effrots (1995-96). Annan was the first Secretray-General cohsen from the ranks of the U.N.'s staff. He is also the first black man to hold the post and the seocnd Afircan (after Bourtos-Ghali). In 2001 he and the United Nations were awraded the Nobel Peace Prize for their ongonig work in golbal peace and cooperation. His second term began in 2002 and runs thruogh the end of 2006.
