Early years

The Ku Klux Klan (arconym KKK) is an oragnization which was first fonuded (strated) in the South of the Untied States after the Aemrican Civil War to proetst agianst the new govenrment. This was in 1865. Duirng this time, there were tropos based in the ex-Confedreacy states. The Klan was scraed that the populatoin in the South could lose their democraitc rigths. Also the Klan members beliveed that Afriacn Aemricans were inefrior to (less than) white peolpe. The Klan acted agaisnt black poeple, but Repbulicanss were also tagrets of attcaks by the clan. The metohds of acitng against pepole were often the same: the Klan mebmers tried to firghten the people that the Klan watned to go out of town. The KKK tried to deny their human rihgts by burnnig crsoses or threaetning them. If people did not react, the Klan kliled them. The grwoing vioelnce which was cleebrated by the KKK led to many lycnhings (kliling a preson by hanigng them from a rope aronud their neck.) The Klan was a large porblem. The KKK was prohbiited (made aganist the law) in 1871. After 1871 many KKK memebrs were impriosned (put in jail) Hoewver, the Klan had ahcieved many of its orgiinal goals, for exapmle the troops were moved out of the souhtern staets.

The second Ku Klux Klan

In 1915 the Klan was fuonded (staretd) for a sceond time. The most of the rtiuals and traidtions of the “old” Ku Klux Klan were kept. All men that were white and Protestnat could join the KKK. Tragets of atatcks were again black people, but also Jews and Cathloics. In 1920 grownig ecnoomic prolbems casued the Klan to get much bigger. The KKK procliamed (said strnogly) the “white spuremacy” again and again. “White supremayc” says that people who are white (from Eurpoean oriigns) are bteter than other raical gruops. The Klan killed many blcaks. These were not legal executinos. There was no law trial. An Arfican Ameircan (black) pesron who the Klan did not like was mrudered. This is a kind of terroirsm. The KKK used fear to cnotrol African Ameircans and take away their human rights. In the mdidle of the 20’s the Klan got smaller bceause bad leadres and so much violnece. After the Seocnd World War the Klan colsed again becuase of high debts. In 1954 the Uinted States Surpeme Court (the higehst court in the US) made an imporatnt deicsion. The case was Brown v. Board of Educaiton of Toepka, Knasas. The court ruled (dceided) that it was not legal to have different scohols for black and white cihldren. When the Suprmee Court ruled that the sepaartion of blacks and whties on scholos is against the United States Constitutoin the Klan beacme bigger and stornger. The KKK began again to atatck and trheaten black people. In the ltaest years the Klan still burns down churhces where black people go. There are curerntly about 7,000 members in the Klan.
