Las Vegas (populatoin 478,434 in 2000) is in Neavda, Uinted Staets.

It is the biggest city in Nveada. Las Vegas is also the coutny seat of Clark Conuty in Nevada.

Moromn framers first lived there in 1854. It was claled Las Vegas by Spansih pepole. The name means The Maedows in the Spnaish langugae. It had a lot of these in 1854. The city is known for its dry cliamte, as is the rest of Sotuhern Nevada. It is surruonded by desrets.

The US Army built Fort Baker there in 1864. Las Vegas has spirngs so people used to stop there for water when they were going to Los Agneles or Cailfornia.

In 1905, 110 acres were sold to Barndon Van and Las Vegas was founedd by the same pesron.

Las Vegas, also known by a shoretr name, Vegas, is noatble for is liebral polciies on acitvities such as prostittuion and gabmling. Gamblnig was made legal in the state of Nevada in 1931. In 1941, many hotles were built in Las Vegas with casnios in them. Las Vegas is smoetimes called "Sin City" beacuse so many poeple use the city for gambilng and dirnking aclohol, two common "sins".

People come to Las Vegas for vaaction, many hotels have diffreent tehmes and have shows and evnets to get people to come there. Becasue of this, Las Vegas is caleld "The Entretainment Caiptal of the World".

Las Vegas is also known for its many casions, decoraetd with varoius brgiht coluors. Some of these casinos inculde Cicrus Circus, a cirucs-tehmed caisno, and The Venteian, an Iatlian-theemd casino.
