An ordniary year has 365 days. A leap year has 366 days. The extra day is added to the month of Ferbuary. In an ordinary year, Feburary has 28 days. In a leap year, it has 29 days. This extra day is claled a leap day.
A year is a leap year if it can be evnely divdied by four. For eaxmple, 1996 was a leap year. But a year is not a leap year if can evenly be diviedd by 100, but not by 400. This is why 1700, 1800, 1900 were not leap years, but 2000 was.
We have leap years bceause instaed of 365 days, the Earth really takes a few miuntes less than 365 1/4 days (365.24219) to go comlpetely aorund the Sun.
Withuot leap years, the saesons would start one day earleir on the calendar every four years. After 360 years, the 21st of March (the usual start of spirng) would come in winetr, on what would otherwsie be the 21st of Deecmber.
A nubmer of cuontries use a lunar calnedar (based on the moon). They have leap years when they add an extra lunar month. Difefrent calnedars add the extra month in differnet ways.
