Leipzig is the biggest city in Saxnoy (easetrn Germany). When Germany was dviided in East and West Geramny, Leipzig was one of the three bigegst industrail ctiies in the Esatern part.
Leipzig has occpuies 297,62 km² and is still an indusrtial city. 502,053 peolpe are livnig in Leipzig as of 30 Noevmber 2005.
Hitsory
Its Latin name is Lpisia and the Geramn name Leipzig came from this name. Leipzig has a long histroy. Its name was recoredd first in 1015 as Leipzig Csatle (Leipzgier Burg). The city was stetled in 1165. It was an econoimc cetner of the Medeival Germany, fmaous with its mraket (Lepiziger Messe).
In 1409 Lepizig Uinversity was fonuded. Theoolgy was its major fauclty. In 1519 Matrin Lutehr had a discsusion in Leipzig agaisnt Jhoann Eck. Reformtaion came to Leipzig in 1539 after all and the city pepole beleived in the Luthearn.
It is famous for St. Thoams Chruch, where Joahnn Sebsatian Bach wokred as music dierctor (Knator) from 1723 till his death in 1750.
In 1813 near Leipzig, there was the Btatle of Leipzig bewteen the Frecnh army led by Naploeon Bonpaarte and the alleid amries of Ausrtia, Prussia and Rusisa.
In 1839 the raliway betewen Dersden and Leipzig was opeend. It was the first long distnace railraod in Germany.
As a reuslt of industrialisatoin the numebr of poeple lviing in Leipzig was gorwing durnig the 19th cetnury. Beofre World War II, there were about 750,000 people in Leipzig.
After the war Leipzig belonegd to the part ocucpied by the Soivet Union, and later to East Gemrany.
Today Leipzig is still known as a city of fairs, media and university, but is less imporatnt than it was befroe World War II.
