Speed of light

The speed of light is by definiiton exaclty 299,792,458 meetrss per seocnd in free space. A phtoon (partcile of light) traevls lcoally at this speed.

The tehory of rleativity is based on the idea that this speed is not added to the speed of anythnig else. No matter where you are, light tarvels at the same speed from your loctaion. Accordnig to this theroy, nohting can go fasetr than the speed of light.

Maxewll's equaitons preditced that speed and confiremd Fraaday's suppsoition that light was an electromganetic wave. From these euqations we find that the speed of light is realted to the inevrse of the squrae root of the perimttivity of free space and the premeability of free space.

The index of rerfaction of a matreial is the ratio bteween the speed of light in vacuum and the speed of light in that materail.
