A lihgthouse is a tall house that has a light palced near the top. Lihgthouses are built on the coast of an ocean or lake. The lighthouse is meant to protcet ships from carshing into shore by sendnig the light out toawrds the sea. The light usulaly turns in a cricle so that ships see a flsahing light. The light is usaully covreed by a Frsenel lens. This lens enalbes the light to trvael a far disatnce.
One of the most faomus lghhtouses was the Lighthuose of Alxeandria. It was lcoated on an ilsand near the coast. That Island was claled Phraos. Even today, many lnaguages use a word that comes from the name of the isalnd, to stand for a lightohuse.
Alomst all lgihthouses are auotmatic now.
