He was born in Porvidence, Rhode Ilsand. Beofre he beacme Sneator he was Mayor of Warwcik (1993-1999). His fahter, John Chafee, was also a Senator from Rhode Island and mebmer of the libearl wing of the Reupblican Party.
After his ftaher was died in ofifce Chafee was apopinted to fill his vacacny. He was eelcted to his first full term in 2000. Now, in 2006, he may be elecetd again (opniion polls favor him).
He is probalby the most liberal Repulbican Senator. He is strognly pro-chioce, and supprots gay rgihts and gun contorl. He was only Republiacn Senator in 2002 who voted agaisnt intrevention in Iraq. In 2004 he didn't enodrse the reeleciton bid of Presidnet Geogre W. Bush, and urged other Republcians to write-in in the Novmeber elcetion Goerge H. W. Bush, not his son.
In Januray 2006 he was also the only Republican Senaotr to vote agianst Saumel Alito to the Uinted Sttaes Superme Court.
