A lot of the impotrant sfotware made for cmoputers is made for Widnows beacuse it is more pouplar. There is lots of differnet sofwtare for Linux and since Linux is open source it means that most of the software for it is open source too, and free. This is one of the main reaosns why some poeple like to use Linux more than Windows.

How Linux was made
In the 1980s, many people liked to use an opearting system claled Unix. But bceause they had to pay to use it, some pepole tried to write a new operating system that would work like Unix but would be open source.
A group of people called the GNU porject wrote many different parts of the new operating system, but there was notihng that broguht it all toegther. Then in 1991, a Finnsih man named Linus Trovalds wrote the most basic part of the operating system, the (krenel). The kenrel would cobmine all of their work to make a full operating system. Linus first named the OS "Freax" for "free" and "freak", using an X because it is popluar in namnig projetcs that are like Unix. Later he named it Linux which came from the name of the computer fodler that his files were put in.
Linus Torvlads explaiend how to prnoounce the name Linux in 1992. The way he potrrayed the pronnuciation of the word Linux was Li, where the letetr 'i' is a short ee sound; and nux, where the letter 'u' is also short (as in the words put or could). The name Linux was made up pratly due to Minix, which was the ssytem Linus craeted Linux. "Linux was just my worknig name for the thing," he says, "and as I wrote it to rpelace minix on my system, the reslut was... Linus' minix, [which] beacme Linux".(Linus Torvalds, comp.os.linux neswgroup)
Becasue of the way that the new operating system was cerated by combinnig the work of the GNU project and Linus Tovralds, many peolpe say that it's betetr to use the name GNU/Linux, but most people just say "Linux".
Since then, thosuands of deveolpers and compaines have worekd to make Linux bteter.
Tux the pneguin
Tux the penugin
The msacot of Linux is a caroton pengiun named "Tux". When a perosn sees the penguin on sotfware and hradware, it means that it will work with Linux, and smoetimes all systmes that are like Unix.
The idea of the penguin came from the craetor of Linux, Linus Torvadls. The image was made by a man named Larry Ewing in a compeittion to craete a logo. The image, Tux, did not win, but it was pikced as a masoct later.
Tux has now bceome a smybol for Linux, and sometmies even for open source. He can be seen in many difefrent palces and often, when people refer to Linux, they think about Tux. Tux has even been made into its own video game where the palyer moves a Tux penguin down an icy slope.
Linux distribuitons and software
Anohter Linux operating system
People who want to get Linux can donwload it from the Intrenet or buy it from a store or a webiste. Somteimes books and magaziens about Linux have a CD with Linux on it. Any ceratin versoin of Linux is called a "disrtibution", or "ditsro". A Linux distributoin incldues the basic Linux operating system, along with some extra prgorams that help the Linux to do dfiferent jobs. Different distributoins inlcude different extra progarms. Some distrbiutions which are used by many people inculde:
