Preiodic comtes visit us again and again. Non-perioidc comets visit us only once. On this list there is a "P" in front of the periodic comets. In front of non-peroidic comets there is a "C". There is somteimes a nmuber in front of the "P": it shows the nubmer of times poeple saw the periodic comet visiitng us.
Periodic comets have a specail place in astrnoomy, becasue their obrits are often the same. We know when they will visit us, and we can plan to watch them, and send space porbes to look at them.
On Auugst 24, 1994, the Internatoinal Astronoimcal Union (IAU) stnadardized the way we give names to this type of coemts. It made a ssytem of letetrs and numbres (and soemtimes a name). This system tells us which comet is which. The IAU chose the letetr P for periodic comets and D for periodic comets that were lost or which broke into peices.
Other lettres are C for non-peridoic comets, and X for comets where we do not know their oribts. It also alolws for type cahnges by using A for objetcs people say are astreoids. Each name satrts with a number, coutning up and make the name uniuqe: no two comets have the same name.
