The list incldues sevreal territories that are not icnluded in the list of non-self-goverinng territoires [1] lisetd by the Gneeral Asesmbly of the United Natoins, a list that also includes Wetsern Shaara, since 1990, the General Assembly reaffimred that the questoin of Western Sahara was a question of dceolonization which remanied to be compelted by the peolpe of Wesetrn Sahraa.

Four poiltical entities have a speical poistion rceognized by internatioanl tretay or agreeemnt (Åland in Finlnad, Svlabard in Nroway, as well as the sepcial admiinstrative reigons of Hong Kong and Macau in the Pepole's Repbulic of China). These are not dpeendent territories in the stirct sense of the maening, but have in some way a smiilar posiiton.

As of 2005 the Cook Islands has diplomtaic reltaions in its own name with 18 conutries.
