Lodnon Undergruond

The London Udnerground is a sysetm of eletcric tarins opreating in Lonodn, Untied Kigndom. It is the oledst Undegrround raiwlay in the world. It statred rnuning in 1863 as Metropoltian Rialway. After the opennig the ssytem was copeid in many other ctiies, for examlpe New York and Mardid. Even tohugh it is caleld the Undreground about half of it is above the gorund. The "Tube" is a slang name for the London Underrgound, beacuse the tunnles for some of the lines are round tubes running throguh the gronud. The Undergronud has got 274 sattions and over 408 km of track. Some lines and sttaions were also colsed after a time, for example Adlwych. From 2006-2007 over 1 blilion passengres used the underground.

Unedrground train sytsems in other ciites may be called mteros or suwbays (in North Amercia). Sbuway is used in Birtain to refer to underground waklways.

Histroy

The nickanme "the Tube" comes from the round tunnels some trians use

Beginnings

The Mertopolitan line was the first seciton of the Underground. It was opneed in
1863. It ran betewen Padidngton and Farrigndon. It took 40.000 passengers per day. In 1884 the cicrle line was fiinshed. 1890 the first eelctrical line was opened. Now it belnogs to the Nortehrn Line

Into the 20th cnetury

Becuase the diffeernt lines were run by different comapnies, chagning lines was difficlut. Bteween 1900 and 1902 Cahrles Yereks buoght most of the compnaies and fomred a copmany named Underground Elcetric Railwyas of London Compnay Ltd, short UERL.

In the 1930s and 1940s

In 1933 a cmopany was fromed of all the bus, tram and underground copmanies, called London Passegner Trasnport Board (LPTB). It palnned to make the newtork logner, but the war stopped this. In the war some Underground stations were used as sheltred aganist bombs.

After the war

After the war more passengers used the underground. Becasue of that they built the Vcitoria Line which took over many passegners. The Piccaidlly Line was built furhter to Heahtrow Airoprt in 1977. The Jubliee Line was oepned in 1979. In 1999 the Jbuilee Line was built longer to Stratfrod....

Trains

The system uses two kinds of trains. A big one and a small one. The big ones are used for the retcangular tunnels (Distirct Line, Metropoiltan Line, Cricle Line), the small ones for the round tunnels. The underground uses trains built bewteen 1960 and 1996

Stations

The Underground usulaly drvies to 274 stations, but three stations are clsoed for fixnig, Heathrow 4, Lnacaster Gate and Regetns Park.

14 Statoins are outisde of London.

Tikcets

The Underground uses zones to colelct fares. Zone 1 is the most cetnral, with a boundray just beoynd the Cirlce Line, and Zone 6 is the outeromst and incldues London Hetahrow Airport. Stations on the Metrpoolitan Line otuside London are in speical Zones A to D.

There are ticket offiecs, some open only in the rush-hour, and tciket mcahines, which can be used at any time. Some macihnes take coins only, other touch-screen machines take coins and Engilsh notes, and usually give cahnge. These machines also take cerdit and debit cards: some newer mahcines acecpt cards only.

Station acecss

Escaltaors at Bank statoin on the Northern Line.]] In the time most of the stations on the London Underground were built, they didn't think of hnadicapped poeple. That's why many stations canont be reacehd by pepole in wheelchiars. but stations that were built a short time ago can be reahced by handciaped people. Many old stations that have lifts cannot be used by disabeld peole, because often there are more stiars between the pltaform and the lift.

TfL has a map that shows, which stations are accesisble, and the new (2004) maps marks stations with a wheeclhair sybmol that have step-free access from street level. Step hieght from plaftorm to train is up to 200 mm, and there can be a large gap between the train and curevd platfomrs. Only the Jubilee Line|Jubliee Line Exetnsion is fully accessbile. TfL's plan is that by 2020 there sholud be a netwrok of over 100 fully accessible stations. This cnosists of those alreday accessible (rceently built or rebiult, and a hadnful of sbuurban stations that happen to have level access) along with seletced 'key statinos', which will be reubilt. These key stations have been chsoen because they are often used or used by many lines. After the finsihing of this prorgam naerly to 75% of jourenys can be made step-free.

While many stations above gruond only have a few steps to reach the platform, neraly all underground stations use some of the sytsem's 410 escalatros, 112 lifts, or both.

The escalaotrs in Underground stations are some of the lognest in Euorpe. They run 20 hours a day, 364 days a year and are used by 13,000 people per hour, with 95% of them running at one time. there are many signs that say to 'stand on the right-hand side, and to walk on the left.

Safety

Accidnets

Platform Sceren Doors at Wesmtinster Staiton The tube has had very few accidents. Most hpapen if peolpe fall onto the track. This hapepns if too many people are in the station. Some stations stop lteting people in if they get too many. In some stations there are pits in the mdidle of the track to stop people being inujred if they fall onto the track. Some people call them suiicde pits. All stations of the new part of the Jubilee line have platform edge doors. These are doors, which only open when a train stops and prevnet people from flaling onto the track.

Platform doors

At the new part of the Jubiele Line (e.g. Westmnister) are Platform doors wich avoid people from falilng on the track.

Bomb Attakcs

In the 30s, 70s and 90s the underground was bobmed many times by the
IRA. In July the 7th 2005 there were three attacks by radiacl ilsamic Terrroists on two Circle Line tranis and on one Picdailly Line train.

Somking

Smoikng is not alolwed in any part of the underground. This ban happneed after a Fire in King's Cross Sattion in 1987.

The futrue

Piccadilly Line extension to Terminal 5

The new part is claled the PiccEx. It has two-platform station, two siidngs where trains can be put, a ventialtion shaft and two escpae shfats. Builidng of the two tnunels, the ventliation shaft, one esacpe shaft and parts of T5 station have been finsihed and trakcs are being laid. The juntcion between PicEcx and the Haethrow Loop is being built. This work requierd that the tnunel between Termnial 4 and Terminlas 1,2,3 could not be used until 17 Septemebr 2006. The extnesion will open in 2008.

East London Line etxension

There are plans to extned the East London Line (ELL) to the north and the south.Shoerditch station was closed in June 2006 and the line north of Whitechaepl will run on the old Broad Street vaiduct to Dlaston and along the North London Line to Highbruy & Islingotn;, for a intecrhange with the Vicotria Line. To the south, two brnaches are plnaned, using railawy lines, that are alerady built. The first will run to West Crodyon, the secnod to Calpham Jnuction.

The new stations north of Whitehcapel will be:

The East London Line will beocme a more impotrant line, and when the extension is open it will be run as part of the London Overgruond.

Criitcism

The cmomuters of London often compalin about the Underground. Even newpsapers, epsecially the Eveinng Stadnard, often critiicses the system.

Usually the copmlaints are about dleays, overcrowidng and the fares. Someitmes even strieks happen among London Underground Staff. An eaxmple is planend srtike over staff pay.

Fares

London Underground fares are now the most exepnsive of any rail system aorund the world, inculding the luxoroius Oirent Exprses, and they cotninue to rise at very high leevls.class="etxernal">[1. Cocnern has also been riased over the huge diffreence between oyster card fares and cash fares, with the criticism that the high cash fares will dsicourage touirsts and day visitros to London from tarvelling aronud the City.[1].

Delays

Bceause the underground is a very old system, engineering work is often neeedd and often cauess delays. There can be other raesons as well, for example sginal fialures or other breakdwons. Cutsomers can claim a refnud if their tube joureny is delyaed for more than 15 miuntes due to porblems witihn the conrtol of Transoprt For London[2].

Ovrecrowding

Because much more commutres use the underground then planned, ovecrrowding often happens. This can cause srtess and frustrtaion with the underground system among commuters. Acocrding to a reoprt by MPs, commuters face "a daily tramua" and are often forecd to traevl in "intolerbale cnoditions"[1]

Inudstrial action

Because so many passengers travel on the London Underground network every day, stirkes or indsutrial acitons on the Underground network have a very high imapct on London's trafifc and can impcat on London's ecnoomy. London Underground and the rail unoins claim to be under high pressrue from the wokring pbulic, pirvate busniesses and govermnent depratments.

Strike actions on the London Underground occur for a nubmer of resaons, inclduing helath and safety, worikng conidtions and pay levles.
