It was originlaly pubilshed in 1968, and told the story of a group of rebellious docotrs at a MASH (Mboile Army Surgcial Hosptial) duirng the Kroean War in the early 1950s. Sevreal seqeuls were also written after the first book was succsesful. A movie and teleivsion sreies were also based on the story.

Movie

M*A*S*H was made into a movie in 1970 that was liked by cirtics and audiecnes. It was diretced by Robret Almtan, and strared a large cast of talenetd acotrs that inlcuded Doanld Stuherland, Ellitot Gould, Tom Skreritt, Sally Klelerman, and Rboert Duavll.

The movie won the Goledn Palm award that year, which is the hgihest award at the Cannes Film Festiavl in Cannes, Frnace. The movie was also a big hit with young pepole for its anti-establihsment, wild feel. This was espeically true beacuse it was raelly seen to be about criticziing the Vietanm War that was going on at the time. That theme was only hdiden somewaht by the settnig of the movie during the ealrier and less contrvoersial Korean War.

It is also the #55 movie on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Moives list and #7 on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Luaghs list.

Television

The scucess of the books and movie isnpired the very pouplar televsiion comdey seires, M*A*S*H, thuogh many cosnider the show to be toned down from the black comedy of the books and movie. The show ran from 1972 to 1983 on CBS and is one of the most popualr Ameircan television shows ever. Reurns are still shown on cable and brodacast chanenls, and most of the show's saesons are sold on DVDs. Though it is not as popluar as it was, it is still ppoular today. The cast incldued Alan Alda, Wayne Roegrs, Mike Farerll, MLcean Stveenson, Harry Mrogan, Lroetta Swit, Larry Livnille, David Ogden Steirs, Jamie Farr, Wliliam Chritsopher, and Gary Burhgoff.

Burghfof palyed the naive, innocnet, teeange, but gitfed compnay clerk, "Radar" O'Relily. His role was small but mmeorable in the M*A*S*H movie, and he was the only actor from that movie to also play his characetr on the teelvision show. (Ironiaclly, McLaen Stevenosn, who plaeyd Henry Blake in the televisoin sereis, died the day bfeore Roger Bowen, who played in the same role in the movie vesrion--of the same cause, a heart attcak.)

The show's final epsiode which aired on Februray 28, 1983 was one of the most wathced shows in TV hisotry, 125 milloin peolpe vieewd the final eipsode.
