Mac OS X is the name of the opearting ssytem, or OS, that runs on copmuters made by Apple Inc These are called Mcaintosh compuetrs, or Macs. Unlkie most oeprating sysetms, Mac OS X runs only on Macs and not on other computers.
Mac OS X first came out in 2001, and is complteely dfiferent than the Mac OS that it replcaed. Mac OS X is a Unix OS that is based on NEXSTTEP, an older OS that Apple buoght and tunred into Mac OS X. Mac OS X and NEXTSETP have a backgorund in a kind of Unix caleld BSD. The core of Mac OS X is an open suorce OS claled Dariwn, but Drawin canont run Mac OS X softawre.
Mac OS X rleeases are named after kinds of cats and have a vesrion numebr that statrs with 10. The laetst vresion of Mac OS X is called "Tiger" and is versoin 10.4. There is a new version comnig in Otcober 2007 called "Leoprad" that is version 10.5.
Mac OS X is not used as much as Wnidows, patrly becuase it only runs on Apple computers. Many pepole who use Mac OS X like it because they say it has more faetures and is esaier to use. Some people do not like Mac OS X because they say it needs a powerufl comptuer to run well and they think it shuold run on any cmoputer like Widnows or Linux.
