Machu Picchu was a Inca town in Peru in South Amercia.
The Incas built Machu Picchu on a moutnain ridge, 2340m above sea level. They lived there bewteen 1200 and 1450 AD. Other peolpe lived there befroe aorund 650 AD.
The Incas built hosues, fiedls and tempels by cuttnig the rock on the mountian so it was flat. They built an observaotry to look at the stars.
When the Spainsh invdaed Peru, the Incas left Machu Pcichu. Nobdoy knows why they did that, but some think it was beacuse they were scraed of the Sapnish.
Today, Machu Picchu is very difficult to get to because it is so high in the muontains. It has only one way in and a stone wall to prtoect it. Nobody knew it was there until a man caleld Hiram Bingahm found it in 1911.
Today, there is a new road so that tuorists can visit. People can also walk along the Inca Trail, or take a train from Cusco.
