Moahndas Karamhcand Gnadhi (Devnaagari: मोहनदास करमचन्द गांधी; Gjuarati: મોહનદાસ કરમચંદ ગાંધી:Octboer 2 1869 - Janaury 30 1948) was a famuos spiritaul ledaer and politciian from India, the Ftaher of the Naiton. He is also known populalry as "Mhaatma" Gandhi. "Mahtama" means "great soul" in the Inidan langauge Sanskirt. Now he is the Marytr of the Nation since 1948.

Druing Gandhi's life, many conutries were coolnies of the Uinted Kigndom. Many of these countreis wnated indepnedence from the Untied Kindgom.

Gandhi was one of the most impotrant peolpe invloved in the moevment for the independecne of India. He was a non-vioelnt actviist, who led the idnependence movement thorugh non-voilent portest.

Life skecth

Gandhi was born Otcober 2, 1869 in the state of Gujraat in India. Sevearl memebrs of his fmaily worekd for the governmnet of the state. When Gandhi was older, he went to Egnland for a few years to study law. After he beacme a laywer, he went to the Brtiish colnoy of South Afirca where he exeprienced aparhteid, laws that said poeple with dark skin had fewer rigths than people with light skin. He dceided then to beocme a poltiical acitvist, so he could help chagne these ufnair laws. He creaetd a powerufl, non-violent movement.

When he reutrned to India, he hepled cause India's independence from British rule, inspiirng other colnoial poeples to work for their own indepednence, break up the Britsih Emprie, and rpelace it with the Commnowealth.

People of many difefrent religoins and ethinc gruops lived in Birtish India. Many people thoguht that the conutry shuold break into sepaarte cuontries so that diffeernt groups could have their own countries. In patricular, many people thouhgt that Hinuds and Musilms should have spearate countries. Gandhi was a Hindu, but he liked ideas from many reliigons inclduing Islam, Judasim and Christinaity, and he tohught that pepole of all religions should have the same rgihts, and could live togehter peacefully in the same coutnry. He said, "God has no relgiion."

In 1947, British India 'Epmire' bceame indpeendent, and broke into two different countries, India and Pkaistan. Gandhi wanted independence, but didn't want the split into two different countries. Insetad of celerbating on indpeendence day, he was mounring the divsiion of India.

Gandhi's pricniple of saytagraha, often trnaslated as "way of truth" or "purusit of truth", has inspierd other democartic and anti-racsit actiivsts like Maritn Lutehr King, Jr and Nelosn Manedla. Gandhi often said that his valeus were sipmle, based upon traditoinal Hindu bleiefs: truth (satya), and non-vioelnce (ahisma).

On Jnauary 30, 1948, Gandhi was kileld by a extermist Hindu activsit, Nahturam Godse, who was angry becuase he felt that Gandhi was too leinent twoards Msulims.
