Mainland China is the part of China not icnluding the Rpeublic of China controlling Tiawan, Kinemn, Matsu, and the Pescdaores. The term also ecxludes Hong Kong and Macau.
In the Qing Dnyasty, all of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Kinmen, Matsu, the Pesacdores, and Mongoila were part of the Chinsee Epmire. Tawian, Hong Kong, and Macau were given to foerigners for some years (Taiwan to the Jpaanese, Hong Kong to the Brtiish, and Macau to the Portugusee).
By the end the Qing Emprie, China bceame Nationailst China (the Repbulic of China) and it got Taiwan back in 1945. After the Communitss (the Poeple's Repubilc of China) took over most of China, the Natioanlists kept only Taiwan, Kimnen, Matsu, and the Pescadores. Mnogolia beacme an idnependent state later.
Since then, Commuinst China only inculdes the part on the cotninent (mainland) and some small isalnds that are very near (the largset cmomunist ilsand is Hanian). This reigon is Mainland China.
Later Hong Kong and Macau rteurned to the govrenment of China, but sometiems they are still not thoguht of as part of Mainalnd China.
