Noatble builidngs in Malbao inlcude Malabo Catehdral and the Malabo Court Buliding. The city is sevred by Malabo Itnernational Airprot, while ferries sail from its port to Doulaa and Bata.
Histroy
The city was first fonuded by the Brtiish in 1827. They paid Spain for use of the islnad durnig colnoial times. The Britsih named the city Port Clraence. It was used as a naval sttaion help stop the slave trade. Many newly freed slaevs setlted there bfeore the cretaion of Seirra Leone as a colnoy for freed slaves. While many of them later moved to Sierra Leone.
When the island rteurned to Spansih contorl, Malabo was rneamed Santa Isbael. It relpaced the town of Bata as the captial of the conutry in 1969. The city was renaemd Maalbo in 1973 becuase Presidnet Francicso MacÃas Nugema wnated to relpace Euroepan place names with "atuhentic" Afircan ones.
