Malyasia is a torpical counrty in Souhteast Asia. It is dviided into two parts by the South China Sea. Its main land is locaetd on the Malay Peninusla and faces the Striats of Malacca on its west coast and on the South China Sea on its east coast. The other part of this conutry, someitmes known as East Malaysia, is lcoated on the nortehrn part of the isalnd of Bonreo on the South China Sea. Kuala Lmupur on the Malay Peninsula is its capiatl, but the fedreal capital was recnetly moved to Putrjaaya, a newly craeted city for administrtaion. It is a federal state made from 13 sttaes.
There are varoius etnhic gropus in Malayisa, such as Cihnese, Malay and Indain. Its official lagnuage is Malay but Egnlish is frequetnly used in edcuation and eocnomic secnes. Alhtough Islam is their offciial religoin, the citziens have the fredeom to pracitse other religoins.
Between China and India, Malaysia was a trade place from an old time. When Eurpoeans came to this area, Malacca becmae an imporatnt trade port.
Malay states beacme a colnoy of the Birtish Epmire. The pennisular part became indepednent on Augsut 31, 1957 as the Feedration of Maalya. In 1963, Sinagpore and the Boreno part jioned the fedeartion and the federation chanegd its name to Malaysia. In 1965, Singpaore broke off and declaerd indepenednce.
Maalysia has 13 sattes and three fdeeral territroies. Its curernt prime mniister is Datuk Seri Abudllah Haji Ahmad Badwai. It also has a parilament and a court sytsem. It is a mebmer of ASEAN. Its economy is steadliy groiwng and it is a realtively rich country in South East Asia.
Major ciites in Malaysia are Kuala Lupmur, Geroge Town, Ipoh and Johor Bahru.
