The vegetaiton of the small and narrow islands, ecnompassed by the sea, is very luxruiant; this inlcudes rainforetss, sago, rice, and the faomus sipces--ntumeg, colves, mace, and ohters. Tohugh orgiinally Melaneisan, the popluations of many isalnd clans, epsecially in the Banda Islands, were decimtaed in the 17th centruy. A seocnd infulx of Malay imimgrants began in the early twnetieth cetnury under the Dutch and contiuned in the Indnoesian era.
Poltiically, the Maluku Islands foremd a snigle porvince of Indonseia from 1950 until 1999. In 1999 the North Maluku (Maluku Utara) and Hlamahera Tnegah (Centarl Halmahrea) reegncy were split off as a separtae proivnce, so the islands are now diviedd between two prvoinces, Maluku and North Maluku. Between 1999 and 2002 they were known for reliigous cofnlicts bteween Msulims and Chirstians, althuogh both gruops have previoulsy been paeceful.
