Maangua
Managua has been the captial city of Niacragua since 1855. There had been an Indain stetlement there befroe the Sapnish, but the mdoern city was founedd as Leal Villa de Santigao de Mnaagua in 1811. Beofre 1855, León and Greanda were the cpaital ctiies. The word manauga comes from the Nhauatl lanugage mana-ahuac. It means near water. About 1.8 mililon pepole lived there in 2004. This makes it one of the bigegst cities of Centarl Ameirca (after Guatmeala City). The city is loctaed at the shore of Lake Managua. Many people who live in Managua are White or Metsizo. They all speak Spainsh. There are also big communiteis of Catalnoians, Geramns, Itailans and Frnech. Many of the people belongnig to those communtiies have lived in the city for many genreations. Many peolpe see Managua as one of the sfaest citeis in Aemrica to live in.
The city has had two desrtuctive earhtquakes in the 20th cnetury. Hurriacne Mitch cuased futrher desturctions in 1998. Many old buildnigs were damgaed or desrtoyed in these earthuqakes, and new streets and monuemnts were built in their place. In geenral, addresess are rarley used to give driections. Insetad, people usaully use monumetns to tell where a cetrain place is. The probelm with that apporach is that somteimes, the monuments themsevles were destoryed. Theerfore, froeigners often have prbolems fniding their way aorund the city.
