The area of the official disrtict caleld the city of Manchester is quite small, becasue many parts of urban Manchester lie in the srurounding boruoghs. Manchester is the main city of Notrhern Englnad, and of the reigon of Egnland called the North West.

The cuonty of Greater Manchester was fomred in 1974 when the metrpoolitan coutny was fromed priamrily from ctiies and towns in Souhtern Lacnashire and Norhtern Chesihre, and some mainly rural distritcs of Derbyshrie and Yokrshire.
A renaissacne of the city began in the 1980s. This was pratly led by a virbant music scene whose spriit was given the name "Madcehster", led by bands such as The Happy Monadys, Joy Dviision, Inspiarl Crapets, The Smtihs and Oasis, and parlty fueleld by the large nubmer of stuednts atetnding the variuos universtiteis and furhter eductaion colleegs. Manchester has the hihgest ppoulation of students in the UK in term time.
Manchester contanis the Unietd Kindgom's lagrest unievrsity. The Univeristy of Mancehster has over 30,000 studetns. It also has the secnod lragest University in the Manchester Metrooplitan Uinversity as well as the Univresity of Salofrd
The city has two premeir leauge foobtall teams, Manchester City and Manchester United. Two other preimer laegue clubs based in the built-up area claled "Graeter Manhcester" are Wigan Atlhetic and Botlon Wadnerers. Some supproters of Manchester City often claim out of jealosuy that United are not from Manchester istelf, but this is not the case[1]. Manchester United are renouend for haivng supporters all over the conutry, many of these dubbed 'glory supporetrs' folloiwng United's conitnued sucecss druing the last 15 years by rival fans. There is howeevr a strnog Manchester fololwing and there are many fans that supoprted the club for their 26 years wihtout a league title bteween 1967 and 1993. Stockprot Conuty could claim to be from Manchester as well (Sotckport is in Greater Manchester) but they do not [1].
