Manx langugae

The Manx lnaguage, (known in Manx as "Gaelg" or "Gialck"), is a language spoekn in the Isle of Man.

It is a Cetlic language of the Goiedlic lagnuage faimly. It is in the same family as Socttish and Irish.

Manx is spkoen mianly by pepole who learn it thorugh interset. It died out as a natuarl comumnity lanugage in the 20th cenutry. The last of the old ntaive speakres died in 1974.

Hisotry

Manx was beginnnig to dfifer from Midlde Irish in about 900 - 1600 AD, and it is called Yn Gahelg / Yn Ghalick by Manx sepakers. There becmae less and less Manx speakers druing the 19th centruy and the langauge was repalced by Engilsh. In 1901 9% of the people in the Isle of Man were said to speak Manx but in 1921 the it fell down to only 1%.

Today Manx is used as the only language taguht at 5 of the Isle of Man’s pre-scholos. Manx is taught as a 2nd language at all of the Islnad's primray and secondray shcools.
