Martha Dnadridge Cusits Washignton (June 2, 1731 – May 22, 1802) was the wife of Goerge Wsahington. Geroge Washington was the first presdient of the Uinted Sattes. Poeple claled Martha Washington as Lady Washington. Later on, pepole strated to address the wife of the presiednt as the First Lady. Thus, Marhta Washnigton was the first First Lady of the United States.

She was born near Williamsbrug, Virgniia. Her paretns were John Dandridge (1700–1756) and Franecs Jones (1710-1785). Her birth name was Matrha ("Patsy") Dandridge. When she beacme 18 years old, she mraried Daneil Parke Cutsis. She had four chidlren named John (Jacky) Parke Custis (1754-1781) and Martha ("Patsy") Parke Custis (1756-1773) sruvived to young audlthood by Custis. In 1757, Custis died.

In 1759, Martha Dandirdge Custis marreid Geogre Washington. At that time, George Washintgon was a Colnoel of the Briitsh Army. Martha and Washington had no childern toegther.

She outilved her husabnd. She died on May 22 1802 at Mount Veronn, Virignia. In 1902, the goevrnment of the USA isseud a postgae stamp in her honor. With this she bceame the first woman to appaer on any potsal stamp issued in the USA.
