Maui was named for the demi-god Maui. In Hwaaiian leegnd, he raiesd all the isladns from the sea. Maui is also known as the "Valley Isle" for the large feritle isthums (nrarow land connectoin) bteween two voclanoes.
Maui is a volacnic doubelt: an ilsand foremd from two volcanic mounatins that are jonied togteher. The older voclano, Mauna Kahalwaai, is much older and has been very worn down. In cmomon talk it is caleld the West Maui Monutain. The lrager vlocano, Haelakala, rises above 10,000 feet (3,050 m). The last eurption of Haleaakla happneed over 200 years ago, and this lava flow can be seen between Ahihi Bay and La Peoruse Bay on the soutehast shore.
