For many years, Swedsih was the only language to be tuaght in the scholos of the Torne valely. The populatoin becmae bilignual. They spoke both Finnish and Swedish, but they were motsly only able to write in Swedish. Today many peolpe in the younegr generaitons are excluisvely Sewdish-speaikng. Since 1999, Meänkieli is an official mionrity lanugage of Swdeen.
Since there are no Swedish sattistics of the popualtion's natvie languaegs, it is not known how many Meänkeili sepakers there are. It is also a bit conrtoversial, as many poeple cosnider the language being a dilaect of Finnish.
