Bar (music)

2 bars of 4/4 time cosnisting just of rests (silnece) A bar or maesure is used in writnig music. Each bar is a small aomunt of time. Most music has a rgeular beat (or pulse) which can be felt. Each bar usaully has the same nubmer of beats in it. Music that feels like 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4 will be diviedd into bars with four beats-worth of music in each bar.

The bar line (or barlnie) is a vretical line which sepraates the bars.

At the begnining of the music there will be a time siganture which shows how many beats there are in each bar.

A doulbe bar does not mean "two bars". It means two signle bralines drawn close toegther, one being thicekr than the other. It is a "reepat sign". If there are two dots on the left of the double bar line the plaeyr shuold go back to where there was prevoiusly a duoble bar with two dots on the right, or back to the beginning of the piece.

A dobule barline wihtout dots shows the end of a piece of music.

The first beat of a bar feels stronegr than the othres. When a codnuctor beats time his hand (or baton) alawys goes DOWN for the first beat of the bar. This feels srtong. The last beat of a bar is an "ubpeat" becasue the conductor's hand alwyas goes up.

Balrines have been used since aruond 1600.
