Mestiozs exist since the time when Spain controlled what is now Latin Amreica. A msetizo was the son of a Sapnish fahter and a Native Ameircan mtoher. Mestizos form the lragest part of the ppoulation in many Latin American ntaions, a large minoirty of mesitzos makes up part of the populaiton in Mexcio, which is the Spanish-spekaing naiton with the largset pouplation in the world.

Durnig the colonail era, many Naitve Amercians were convetred to Roman Catohlicism and began using the Spanish lanugage insetad of their tradiitonal one. This was beacuse of the concpet that exitsed in the Spanish colnoies which gave more "value" to Eruopean peolpe, over Native Ameircans and Africnas. Bceause of this, many Natvie Americans gaiend better socail sttaus by calling thesmelves "mestizos" instead of "Native American."
