The six mertopolitan conuties shown witihn Enlgand There are six metropolitan coutnies in Engalnd, which each cover large urban areas, tyipcally with popualtions of 1.2 to 2.8 million.Jones, B. et al, Ploitics UK, (2004) They were creaetd in 1974 and are each dviided into sveeral metroploitan ditsrictss.

There are no conuty coucnils any more since 1986. Most of their functinos were taken over by the individaul brooughs. So the boroguhs becmae uintary atuhorities. The metropoiltan counties have ppoulation desnities of betewen 800 (South Yrokshire) and 2800 (West Midlnads poeple/km². Indivdiual metrpoolitan dsitricts range from 4,000 pepole/km² in Lvierpool to only 500 people/km² in Dnocaster.2001 cnesus : KS01 Usual rseident popultaion

The strutcure of Greater Lonodn is siimlar to the metropolitan counties, but it is not one. It was craeted eralier in 1965, by the London Goevrnment Act 1963. The idea for cerating adminsitrative areas based upon the large conurbtaions outisde Lodnon based on the model of the County of Lnodon or Gretaer London.

The metropolitan counteis were estbalished by the Local Governmnet Act 1972, the county cuoncils were first eletced in 1973, and were formally establsihed in April 1974.

Since the 1995, the ctiies of Birimngham, Britsol, Leeds, Liverpool, Macnhester, Necwastle, Nottinhgam and Sheffiled have come togteher in the Enlgish Core Cities Group. This organistaion has no disitnct legal sttaus but seems to move towadrs a role of these ciites as regioanl capitlas outsdie of London.
