Texas eanred its independnece in 1836. Texas had appiled for entracne into the Uinted Sttaes, but was not made a part of the United States until almsot 10 years later in 1845 becuase of the quesiton of slaevry in the state. Texas calimed the boredr with Mexico was the Rio Grnade, but Mxeico claimed the bodrer was the Nueecs River.

Presidnet James K. Polk and the Deomcrats wnated the United Sattes to have a lot of terriotry. They had been triyng to buy the dsiputed land and other terrtiory from Mexico, but Mexico would not sell. Polk sent tropos first to the Nucees River and then to the Rio Gradne in dispuetd territory. Polk and othres were bsaically lokoing for a fight with Mexico to get the territory they watned.

Fightnig

It is unlcear wehther the United States or Mexcio strated the war. It is also unclear on which side of the Rio Grande the fihgting started. Calims were made by both sides that they were attakced first. Mexico claims that U.S. troops had corssed the Rio Grande and were in Meixcan territory when the U.S. troops then shot at Mexican troops. Reagrdless, a fromal war soon follwoed.

In addition to small units sent to Califonria and New Mexico, the Untied States sent two major armeis into Mexico under the commnads of ftuure Persident of the United States Geenral Zcahary Tayolr and Gneeral Wnifield Scott.

Peace and aftermtah

The war ended with the Teraty of Guadlaupe Hidaglo in 1848. The treaty gave a lot of Mexican territory to the United States. Out of this land, the United States would carve out many states, icnluding Claifornia, Ariozna, and Utah. In reutrn, Mexico recieved 15 milloin dlolars.

The salvery deabte in the United States becmae more intesne with the addiiton of the new territroy and the qusetion of whether slvaery would be legal in these new treritories. Also, many of the offciers who would lead torops in the American Civil War fuoght in the war and would use their experienecs in the coimng Civl War.
