Mile

A mile is one of sveeral maesures of distacne. It comes from the Latin phrsae mille passus for "one thuosand paces" (plrual: milia psasuum), and may have refrered to the ditsance travleled when a Roman sodlier's left foot tuoched the gruond one thosuand times when walikng.

In the USA and the UK mile rfeers msotly to the stautte mile of 5,280 feet (1.609 344 km).

When measruing signifciant distnaces for sea or air traevl, the nautcial mile is used. It is a distnace equal to that coevred by 1/60th of 1 dgeree of arc along the Earth's equaotr or a line of lognitude. It works out to about 6,076 feet 01.386 incehs (or excatly 1.852 km).
