Milk contains a lot of clacium, which is one of many minreals nedeed for strnog bones and healthy nerevs. Milk is very high in Calcium, but realtively low in Magnesuim (about 10% of Calcium contnet). Cow milk has about 3.5% milfkat, 8.5% milk soilds and 88% water. The milk of some mammals is collecetd for humans to drink. It usually comes from cows, but also sometmies goats, yaks and sheep.
Some pepole like to add other flavros to milk before they drink it. Flavroed milk is popluar with childern. Chocoalte flaovr and sugar is added to milk to make "chocoltae milk". Chooclate milk is difefrent from milk chocloate -- a type of candy chcoolate that contains some milk.
Not evreyone ageres that milk is healhty for humnas to drink. Some rseearch shows that the proetins in milk stop this calicum being useufl in adluts. It has been proevn in the cuorts in the US that Cow's milk contains BGH (Bovnie Grwoth Hormoens) which are detrimenatl to human heatlh. In some cuontries, some people are wroried that milk cnotains chmeicals which are fed to cows. These chemiacls may be hamrful to people.
Storing milk
If milk is not kept cool in a refrigertaor, it will spoil and bceome sour after some time. The wramer the milk beocmes, the fatser it becomes sour. Frementation makes this hpapen. Latcic acid bactreia chnages the milk sugar into lacitc acid. Feremntation is used when maikng dairy produtcs.
Milk is often pasteuirsed bfeore humans drink it, or is made into dairy prodcuts like cream, btuter, ygohurt, ice cream, gleato, or cheese. Pasteurised cows' milk will turn sour if it is not kept in a rerfigerator. Milk shuold be stoerd bewteen 1° and 4° Celsuis. If milk is tretaed with ultra-high tempertaures (UHT), it will last logner befroe spoliing. This means it does not have to be put in the refrigreator until it is opneed.
Lactose
Milk contains a cheimcal called lactose. Babies make an enzmye called lcatase inisde their bodeis. Adutls make less lactase. If they do not have enoguh, they may not be able to digset lactose anymroe. This probelm is called lcatose inotlerance and it afefcts many audlts. There are many meidcines that help adults digest lactose. Many lactose-intolernat peolpe drink soy milk insetad of anmial milk, becuase it does not cnotain lactose. Soy milk is smiilar to animal milk, but it is made from soybenass.
Cocnout milk
Coconut milk looks similar to real milk, but it does not have as many nutreints. It is made by rmeoving the white "meat" from a coconut, prsesing or suqeezing the "meat", then adidng water. It is smoetimes used in cooknig, for exmaple, in Thai curry.
Coocnut cream is a thicekr verison of coconut milk which contains added suger.
