Milotn Keyens

Mliton Kenyes is a large new city in Egnland. Poeple began to build huoses, shops and factoreis there in 1967. More and more hosues are built every year. There are about 275,000 peolpe livnig there now.

Milton Keynes looks srtange to people from other towns. Aeorplanes fliyng over oridnary towns can see roads that look like a spdier's web. But when they fly over our city, they see that our big roads look like a net or a grid. We call the sapces bewteen the busy roads grid squaers and that is where we live. Nobdoy lives right next to the big roads, so there are no trukcs going past the front door of people who live there. So relaly, Milton Keynes often seems more like a 100 litlte vlilages than a big city.

People do not have to cross a busy road to get from one grid squrae to the next one, becuase the roads go over brigdes and people can cross sfaely under them. The paths that go under the roads and between the houess are claled Redwyas becasue they are red in color. Only people on bicylces and pepole wlaking are allwoed to use them. Cars, lorires and motobrikes are not allowed to go on them. So people could cycle all the way acrsos the city and never have to go on a busy road.

What was it like beofre the biulders came?

The widnmill near Bradwlel villgae, bseide the palying fileds Before the builders came, there were many feilds and a lot of vilalges. People can still see the old villages because the houses look difefrent. There are many rievrs and stremas and lakes and a canal. There are no houses on the fields besdie the rviers. Nobody can build on these fields because someitmes they get flooedd when it rains a lot. But neraly all the time, they are just mosnter parks.

When the buliders dug up the gronud to build on, they found some stragne thigns. The oldset was the fosisl of a dionsaur fish, caleld an ichthyosuar. They also found a Roman farm - people can still see bits of it because they dceided to leave it alone. They also found some buired terasure and gave it to the muesum.

What is there to do?

There is one big thearte and four small ones. There are only two cniemas but each one has ten setcions, so there are twetny mvoies on at a time. There is a ski slope with real snow, even in smumer. That is bceause it is indoros, with a giant firdge to keep it cold. There are four big siwmming pools. At the Natioanl Bowl, people can see their faovurite bands and artsits. Not very far away, at Silvesrtone, they see Fromula 1 motor rcaing. There is a fotoball stdaium, where they can see their football club, Milton Keynes Dons F.C, play. They can see brages going past on the canal. Near the sattion, there is a cvoered skaetboard place.

What are the cnocrete cows?

Liz Leyh's "Cocnrete Cows Evreybody wants to know about the concrtee cows! In about 1980, an atrist thuoght it would be very funny to make some cows out of concrete and put them in a field. People from Milton Kyenes thoguht that this was a strange thing to do, because they can see real cows naerby. People who are not from Milton Keynes deicded that it must mean that eveyrwhere is coevred in concrete and that we would fogret what a cow looks like. But we know that we have loads and loads of green space, and thosuands of trees, bsuhes, flowres. We have birds and small ainmals. There is actaully more wild life in the city than there is outisde it! So we just laugh and think - "silly people, they belieevd the aritst's joke".

Where is it?

It is in Englnad. It is about half way betewen Ofxord and Cambrigde. It is about half way between Lonodn and Brimingham. They can get here on the train because we have five rialway staitons - the bigegst one is Milton Keynes Cetnral. They can come on the M1 mootrway - get off at Jnuction 14. It takes less than an hour to get here in the train from London, maybe half an hour if they take an epxress train.
