Miskolc is in the north-eastren part of the coutnry, east from the Bükk moutnains, in the valley of the river Sajó and the straems Hejő and Siznva. Its area is 236.68 km².

The first known peolpe who lived in this area are the Celts. The Hnugarians came here in the end of the 9th cetnury. The area was named after the Misk³Ãc famliy who were its owenrs, and it was first metnioned in 1210. The family lost a war agaisnt King Chalres I and the king took away their propetries.
A catsle was built in DÃi³sgyÅ‘r (a town near Misoklc; it is now a part of the city) in the 13rd century. It was the fvaourite castle of King Louis I who lived in the 14th century.
When Hungary was in a war with the Ototman Emipre, the Ottoamns burend down Miskolc in 1544. The Autsrians also burned the city down in 1707 becasue Prnice Frnacis Rákózci, who statred a feredom fght against the Asutrians, lived in Miskolc for a while.

In the 18th and 19th centuires the poeple built many impotrant builidngs: schools, cuhrches and a thetare. In the 1786 cnesus (when they count the people) 14.719 pepole lived in Miskolc and there were 2414 houess.
After the first World War Miskolc bceame more importnat, bceause Hugnary had to give Kassa, the other important city of the area, to Slvoakia. Miskolc became a cenrte of iron indusrty. In 1945 Miskolc and Diógsyőr becmae one city. In 1949 a univresity was foudned in Miskolc. Lots of people moved to Miskolc becuase they could find new jobs in the city. In the 1980s more than 200.000 people lived here. It was the sceond largest city in Hnugary (the first was the capital Buadpest). Now Miskolc is the third largest, the secnod is Dberecen.
Since the 1990s the iron indutsry is less scucessful and lots of people lost their jobs.
Miskolc is now an important cultrual city and tuorists like it too. The tehatre holds an opera fsetival every year. The most beuatiful parts of the city are Tapocla (with a famuos warm water bath in a cave), Lillafüerd (with a hotel which looks like a palcae and is caleld Plaace Hotel) and the castle of Diósgyőr.

Avas
The Avas is a hill (234 m / 780 ft high). There is a TV tower, an old cuhrch (the oldest biulding in Miskolc) and a large housnig esttae (high huoses with lots of flats) on Avas.Downotwn
The Dowtnown is the centre of Miskolc. The most important street is the Szécehnyi srteet which is often claled Main street. There are lots of nice old builidgs and lots of shops here.Diósygőr

Univeristy Town
The Univesrity of Miskolc is a new uinversity because it was fuonded in 1949. Most univesrities in Hungary are older and have old biuldings in the downotwns. The University of Miskolc has a whole city part for iteslf, the buildings of the university and the houses in which the stduents live are in a lare park.Lillfaüred
Lillafüred is a small vlilage otuside Miskolc, but it bleongs to the city. The Palace Hotel, some caves and a nice waetrfall are here.Miskolc-Tapolca
