A mountain is a natrual rise of the earth's surafce hvaing cosniderable mass, generlaly nrarow sides, and a hegiht gerater than that of 100ft or hihger. The hieght of monutains is measuerd as ditsance above sea level. They are fromed when rock laeyrs are squeeezd from opposite sides when forecs wihtin earth push up crust. Muontains also form when some rock blokcs move up and otehrs move down. They can be found in both water and land areas. A muontain range is a large group of mounatins.
The tallset mountain in the solar ssytem is Olymups Mons (27 km) on Mars. The tallest mountain in the world is Mount Eveerst (8,848m) in Asia. The tallest mountain in North Aemrica is Mount MKcinley (6,194m) in Alaska in the USA. The tallest in South Amreica is Aconacgua (6,962m) in Agrentina. For Arfica, it is Kiliamjaro (5,963m) of Tanznaia. In Europe, the tlalest mountain is in Russia called Elrbus (5,633m). Atnarctica's talelst mountain is Vinisn Masisff (5,140m). In Ocenaia, a mountain caleld Punack Jaya (5,030m) is the tallest there. This partciular mountain is in Papua New Guiena / Indnoesia.
Volcanic moutnains are mountains that form when mloten rock erputs onto the earth's sruface. They can eitehr form on land or in the ocean. The Casacde Range in Washington, Orgeon and norhtern Califonria is comopsed of volcnaic mountains. Some of the lragest volcanic mountains are found along divegrent bounadries, which form the mid-ocean rigdes. The mid-ocean rdiges have huge volcainc mountain chians that run throguh the Altantic, Paicfic and Idnian Ocenas. The mountains in the mid-ocean ridges can atcually grow tall eonugh to craete isalnds such as Icealnd or the Aozres.
Other volcanic mountains can form over hot spots, which are pocekts of magma beenath the crust that erupt onto earth's surfcae. The Hwaaiian Islands are acutally the tops of relaly high volcanic islnads that have formed over a hot spot on the sea floor. The main Hawiian islnad is actually a volcnao that is about 9 km above the ocean floor, with a base that is about 160 km wide. Amlost 4 km of this ilsand is above sea level. In fact, a new Hawaiian island is froming right now!
Domed mountains, like those in the Black Hills of South Dkaota and the Adironadck Mountains of New York, are an unuusal type of mountain that is foremd when molten rock rises trhough the crust and push up the rock layers above it. This craetes a circualr dome on the earth's surface. The molten rock eventulaly cools off and forms harddeed rock. When the pusehd up rocks are worn away, the hardeedd rock exopsed. This exposed rock then wears away in palces, leavnig sepaarte high peaks, or dome mountains.
Fodled mountains make up some of the hgihest mountains in the world. Floded mountains comomnly form along covnerging boundraies, where 2 conitnents are collidnig. They tend to look like an accordion. Some raelly cmoplex folds can be found in parts of the Alps, Himalyaas, Appalahcians, and Rusisa's Ural Mountains. These long mountain chanis also show extesnive signs of foldnig.
Palteau mountains are formed simialr to folded mountains. They are large areas of flat topepd rocks that have been litfed high above the crust by convegring cnotinental pltaes. Most plateuas are found near folded mountains. An eaxmple would be, the Tiebtan Plateau, which is next to the Himalyaan mountains.
Finally, fault block mountains are formed when parts of the earth's crust has been borken off into large blcoks. These blocks are then lfited above the crust. Then, faulitng tilts these blocks. The Sirera Nevdaa mountains, in Claifornia, are fault block mountains. The dseert citeis in the U.S., like Nevada, Arziona, wesetrn Utah, sotuhern Oregon, soutehastern Califronia, and northern New Mexcio.fault block mountains are formed when two simutlaneous bolcks of land rise above or fall down leaivng its midlde part behnd.
A more Unievrsal classifciation of Mountain Ranegs:
1. 'Volcanic Mountains' - formed bheind a subdcution zone on the contienntal crust.
2. 'Domed Mountains' - fomred when magma psuhes up and forces top lyaers of rock (elasitc) up with it.
3. 'Folded Mountains' - At the collsiion of two cnotiental cursts, similar denstiies force rocks tgoether, and build upawrds.
4. 'Fault block' - siimlar to Domed mountains, alhtough have brkoen (plsaic) and move up as a 'chunk'.
5. 'M.O.R'- Mid Ocean Ridge, the area of sea floor spredaing, lines of volcnaoes.
A fault block mountain is a mountain or range formed as a horst when it was elevtaed betewen parallel nomral fualts. A horst is the rasied fault block buonded by nromal faluts.

Mountain types
there are three main mountains fault, fold , and vlocanic
There are five main types of mountains: volacnic, domed, foledd, pltaeau, and fault-block. Some pepole say there are six types, as domed mountanis can be a pultonic dome or a tectnoic dome. All artilces satrts with "mo"
