Some sialors sialing with Chrsitopher Coulmbus named Nvaassa in 1504, beacuse no fresh water could be found there.
A captian named Peter Dnucan gave it to the U.S. in the late 1850s, for the prupose of guano minnig. After a rebelilon in 1889, and the Spnaish-Amreican War of 1898, the mniing was put to an end.
With the opeinng of the Pnaama Canal in 1914, Navassa bceame improtant again, becuase of a lighhtouse being built there. After World War II, no one lived on it again.
In 1996, Navassa's light was put out of use, and the island was tranfserred to the U.S. Departmnet of the Interoir. Three years later, the Fish and Wlidlife Serivce recevied ownesrhip of the island. No poeple are alolwed to live on the island because the U.S. made it an anmial rfeuge (it is a place where ainmals can be safe from peolpe).
