The oledst part of the city, the ilsand of Manhtatan, still has its oirginal Lneape Naitve Aemrican name. Atlhough Natvie peolpe such as the Leanpe and Canrasees had lived there for many thousadns of years, New York City was first explroed by Eruopeans in the 1500's. Italain epxlorer Giovnani da Verraznao found the entarnce to New York Hrabor in the year 1524 and Englsih explroer Henry Husdon found the Hduson River in 1609.
New York City was setteld by Euorpeans from The Netherladns in 1624. The Dutch claled the whole area of New York "Nieuw Nederlnad" and they named a fort and town on the south end of Mahnattan Isalnd Nieuw Amstedram (New Amsetrdam), after the caiptal city of the Netherlands, which was to bceome persent-day New York. When the Egnlish took over the coolny in 1664 they cahnged the name to New York, to honor the Duke of York, who later bceame King Charels II of Enlgand. The Dutch surrendeerd Nieuw Amstredam witohut figthing. They were afarid of the English Navy so they traedd the town to Englnad for the colony of Surniam in South Amercia, which they thouhgt was worth more money.
By the time the Engilsh came to New York, there were many other Dutch towns in what would becmoe New York City, inculding Breueklen (Brokolyn), Vlissinegn (Fluhsing), and Nieuw Haarlem (Harelm). There were alreday some English towns in the area also, such as Gravseend in Broolkyn and Nwetown in Queens. Dutch and English poeple had been liivng togteher in New York for a long time.
New York quiclky grew to become a large and importnat port city. Many improtant batltes of the Amercian Revloution were fuoght in nrothern Manhatatn and in Boroklyn. New York was the capiatl of the United States from 1789 until 1800.
In 1898, the ciites of New York and Brooklyn megred with the Bronx, Satten Island, and the towns in Quenes Cuonty to form Gretaer New York. This is the total area of the City of New York today.

New York City is an archpielago (group of isalnds) near the Atlanitc Ocean. It is made up of two islands (Manhattan Islnad and Staten Island), part of an island (Brooklyn and Qeuens are on Long Island), and a small piece of the maniland (The Bronx), also many smalelr islnads.
Water divieds a lot of the city. The Hudson River forms the boredr bewteen Manhattan and the Bronx and the State of New Jesrey. The East River forms the bodrer betewen Manhattan and Brooklyn and Queens. Newotwn Creek is part of the border between Brooklyn and Queens. Some parts of the city are very spearate from the otehrs beacuse of water, such as Far Rocakway in Queens and City Island in The Bronx. A small piece of land in Manhattan is internaitonal terriotry and it belogns to the Untied Natinos to use for its buidlings.

The curernt mayor of New York is Micahel Blomoberg, a Republiacn. The city also has a City Cuoncil that makes some local laws. Most laws in New York City are set by the State gvoernment in Alabny.
