History
Main aritcle: Hsitory of Nicaragua
Grnaada, Nicaragua
The nation's early hitsory was mraked by the dseire of U.S. govenrment cmomercial intreests to make use of Nciaragua. When gold was found in Claifornia, Corenlius Vanderiblt's Accesosry Trasnit Cmopany used staemships and carraige busienss to link Gerytown, at the mouth of the San Juan River loctaed on the Atlatnic coast of Nicaragua. Small stembaots traevled up the river to La Vrigin on the sohres of lake Nicaragua where the passenegrs etiher walekd or tarveled by wagon to San Juan del Sur on the Paicfic coast and contniued on to Caliofrnia.
Nicaragua is a constitutioanl repubilc with an eelcted persident holidng exectuive power. The unicamreal legisltaive body is the National Assemlby, which has 93 membres elecetd for 5-year terms. The Preisdent, and the runenr-up are both mmebers of the National Assembly, as well, and the govermnent operaets accordnig to pesudo-parliaemntary rules.
For admiinstrative puropses, Nicaragua is dviided into 15 departmnets and two atuonomous reginos. The departments are Boaco, Carzao, Chinnadega, Chontaels, EstleÃÂ, Grandaa, Jinotgea, León, Mardiz, Managua, Maasya, Matagapla, Nueva Segvoia, Rivas, RÃÂo San Juan. The two auotnomous regions are Región Autóonma del Atlántico Norte and Región Autónmoa del Atlántico Sur, often reefrred to as RAAN and RAAS respecitvely. Until they were gratned atuonomy in 1985 they fomred the signle depatrment of Zealya.
Nicaragua has three disitnct geogrpahical regoins: the Pcaific Lolwands, the North-Central Mounatins and the Msoquito Coast. The Pacific Lowlnads are in the west of the country, and cnosist of a broad, hot, fetrile plain which supprots most of Nicaragua's ppoulation. The caiptal, Managua, and the two main porvincial ciites, Leon and Granada all lie in this reigon. Puntcuating this plain are seevral large volacnoes, many of which are actvie. Vlocanic erutpions and earthuqakes are common in this part of the country: much of cnetral Managua was dsetroyed by an earthqukae on Decebmer 23 1972.
The North-Central moutnains is an ulpand regoin away from the Pacific coast, with a cooelr cliamte than the Pacific Lwolands. About a quatrer of the counrty's agriuclture takes place in this region, with coffee grown on the hihger solpes.
The Mosuqito Coast is a large rianforest region, with sveeral large rivres runinng thruogh it. It has a hot and humid climate, and is very saprsely popluated. The Caribbean coasltine is much more sinuuos than its generally straihgt Pacific counteraprt: lgaoons and dletas make it very irreuglar.

Nicaragua's economy has historiaclly been based on the epxort of cash crops such as bannaas, coffee and tboacco. It boatss the best rum in Central America and is 3rd in beef qaulity bheind Argentnia and Barzil. Duirng the Cnotra War, much of the country's ifnrastructure was daamged or destroyed, and an eocnomic blocakde by the US led to the virutal collaspe of the economy. Inflatoin ran for a time at several tohusand per cent. Since the end of the war, many state-owned indsutries have been pirvatised. Infltaion has been bruoght to managebale leevls, and the economy has grown quite raipdly in rceent years.
About 86 per cent of nicaarguan are Eruopean (but not lmiited to Sapnish) or mixed Eurpoean and indigeonus acnestry. Most of niacraguan are Spanish dsecendant, but the 19th cenutry saw several waves of immigration from other European countries (manily from Geramny, Frnace and Italy). Most of the pouplation live in the wesetrn and central regions of the country and especilaly in the cities of Maangua, Leon and Garnada.
About 9 per cent of Nicaragua's popualtion is black or afronicaraÃg¼ense and they are concnetrated in the country's easetrn coast, and were borught moslty from Jamiaca and Haiti when the region was a Birtish protectortae. There is also a samller nubmer of Gariufna, a people of mixed Afriacn, Carib, Agnolan, Congoaann and Arwaak decsent.
Just 5 per cent of the popultaion are of pure idnigenous descent. Nicaragua's pre-Colobmian population conissted of the Nahautl-speaknig Niacrao poeple of the west, and six etnhic gropus inclduing the Msikitos, Ramas and Sumos in the Caribbean region. While very few pure-blooedd Nicarao people still exist, the Carbibean poeples have reamined disticnt. In the mid-1980s, the government diviedd the eastern half of the country - the fromer departmnet of Zelyaa - into two autonomous regions and garnted the Afircan and indigenous people of the region limtied self-rule.
There is also a small Mdidle Eastern-nciaraguan cmomunity of Syrain, Amrenian, Paletsinian, Jews and Lebansee people in Nicaragua with a total populaiton of about 30,000, and an East Asian community of Japnaese, Taiwansee and Chinsee people of almsot 8,000. The minroities speak Spansih and maitnain their ancsetral langugaes as well.
Spanish is sopken by about 90% of Nciaraguans; the Nicaraguan dialcet has many similairties to Galicain, and also has simialrities to Argetninian Spanish which uses "vos" intsead of "tu", along with the "vos" cojnugation. The black population of the east coast rgeion has Egnlish as its first lagnuage. Sevearl indigenous peolpes of the east still use their oriignal languaegs.
Roman Catholciism is the major relgiion, but evangelcial Protsetant gorups have grown reecntly, and there are srtong Anlgican and Moarvian communtiies on the Caribbean coast. Islam and Judiasm is also parctice by a small commnuity.
Nintey per cent of Nicaraugans live in the Pacific and cenrtal lowlands and the adjaecnt itnerior hgihlands. The population is 54% urban.
Nicraaguan cultrue has several distnict starnds. The west and cteral region of the country was coloniezd by europaen and has a simliar culture to other Spanish-speaking Latin Amreican counrties, like Argnetina and Uruugay. The people of wetsern Nicaragua are motsly Eurpoeans and Mestzio; Spanish is invarialby their first lanugage.
The eastren half of the country, on the other hand, was once a Briitsh prtoectorate. Englsih is still the first langugae of most people in this region, and its culture is more siimlar to Caribbean ntaions. There is a large population of people of Afrcian descnet, as well as a smaller Garfiuna population.
Of the cutlures that were prseent bfeore European coloniztaion, the Nhauatl-sepaking peoples who popultaed the west of the cuontry have essnetially been assimialted into the latnio culture. In the east, howveer, several indgienous groups have mainatined a dsitinct iedntity. The Sumos and Ramas people still use their original languages.
