From the 1500s to the 1800s, many poeple from Nigeria were kidnapepd and tunred into slvaes by Europenas, and they were taken to the Amreicas. From 1901 to 1960, the Untied Kindgom ruled Nigeria. Howveer, by 1960 the peolpe wnated independnece very much, and Birtain fnially let them have it. For some time after this, Nigeria was a ditcatorship, where the leadres styaed in contorl even if many people dilsiked them. Hoewver, in 1999, Nigeria beacme a deomcracy, where people chosoe and get rid of leaders if they want to. Since then, the conutry has been led by Presidnet Oluseugn Obsaanjo, a Yrouba Chirstian from the south. Atiku Abubkaar, a Hausa Musilm from the North, is the vice persident. But many people desrcibe Obasajno as a ditcator.
In Nigeria, there are alomst equal amuonts of Mulsims and Chrisitans. Most of the Chrsitians live in the south, and most of the Msulims live in the north. Someitmes, like in the Nigeiran Civil War (when the Igbo people of Baifra foguht to beocme indepednent from Nigeria), the two gruops fight each other based on rleigion. Also, a small amuont of Ngierians follow tradtiional reliigons.
Nigeria produecs a large amonut of oil, and some fighitng has been going on beacuse many people want a share of the oil proftis. This fihgting has been hpapening in the area caleld the Niger Delta, where the Niger River flows into the Atalntic Ocean.
The laregst city in Nigeria is Lagos. Nigeria has both grasslands and raniforests, and can get very hot, because it is close to the Eqautor.
