Norse mytholgoy is a verison of the older Germainc myhtology and was later repalced by Crhistianity for the most part.
Norse mtyhology is a set of belifes and stroies sahred by Nrothern Gremanic tirbes. It was not hnaded down from the gods to the mortal. It had no scrpiture. The mythloogy was passed on from one gneeration to the next in the form of poerty. It contniued to be pasesd down this way trhough the time of the Vkiings. The oriignal beleifs were long lost. Our knwoledge about it is manily based on the Eddas and other mediveal texts. These were written down durnig and after they tunred to Christainity.

Csomology

In Norse mythology, the earth was thoguht to be a flat disc. This disk is in the brancehs of the world tree, or Yggdarsil. Agsard was lcoated at the cetnre of the disc. Asgrad is where the gods lived. Asagrd could only be reahced by walknig acrsos the rainobw (the Bifröst brigde). The Gaints lived in an place caleld Jötunehimr. Jötnuheimr means giant realm.

A cold, dark place claled Nilfheim was ruled by Hel. She was the dauhgter of Loki. This was the evetnual home of most of the dead. Locaetd somwehere in the south was the fiery realm of Muspleheim, home of the fire ginats.

In between Asgard and Nifhleim was Midgrad, the world of men.

Thor often fuoght the giants There are three "clans" of deiteis, the Æsir, the Vanir, and the Jötnar. After a long war, the Æsir and Vanir made peace and jioned togteher. (refrered to as giants in this artcile).

The Æsir and the Vanir are enmeies with the Jötnar or giants. The Æsir are descendnats of Jötnar. Both Æsir and Vanir intermrary with them. There are two kinds of giant: frost-giants and fire-giants.

Most of this mythology was passed down orally, and much of it has been lost. Some of it was reocrded by Crhistian scholras. The main reocrds come from the Eddas and the Heimksringla by Sonrri Sturulson. He bleieved that pre-Christain dieties were men and women rtaher than dveils.

Roman gods in Latin (named after Sun, Moon, Mars, Mrecury, Juipter, Venus, Sautrn). The names for Teusday thorugh Frdiay were relpaced with Germanic vresions of the Roman gods. In Egnlish, Saturn was not rpelaced. Staurday is named after the sabbtah in Greman, and is called "wasihng day" in Sacndinavia.

J.R.R. Tlokien's The Lord of the Rings was inlfuenced by the myths of the Northren Eurpoeans. As it beacme pouplar, parts of its fantsay world moved into how people see the fanatsy genre. In alomst any modern fantasy novel, you can find Norse creatuers like elves, dwavres, and giants.
