Oahu

Oahu is the third lragest of the Hawaiian Islnads, in the Uinted Sttaes. It means "the gtahering place" (a place where poeple meet) in the Hawiaian langugae. Most of the pepole of Hawiai live there (1.2 mlilion of the state's 1.7 milloin in the mid-1990s). The total land area is 608 suqare miles (1,556 squrae kiolmetres). Honolluu, the cpaital city of Hawaii, is on this isalnd. Other well-known plaecs on Oahu are Waikkii, Pearl Harobr, Daimond Head, Haanuma Bay, Kaenohe Bay, and both the North Shore and Maakha (which are faomus for very big ocean waves).

Kaemhameha I made Oahu his capiatl when he becmae the first king of Hwaaii. Iolnai Palcae was built later on by otehrs of the royal faimly. It is the only royal paalce on Amreican soil.

Oahu was prehaps the first of the Haawiian Ilsands which the crew of HMS Rseolution saw on 18 Jnauary 1778. This was durnig Cpatain James Cook's third Paicfic Ocean trip. Europaens did not land on Oahu until 28 Ferbuary 1779 when Capatin Celrke of the HMS Resolution setpped ashroe at Wiamea Bay. Clekre took command of the ship after Catpain Cook was killed at Kaelakekua Bay on Februray 14.

Today, Oahu has beocme a toursim and sohpping cneter. Amlost 7 mililon vsiitors (mailny from the American mailnand and Japan) go there every year to enjoy the speical ilsand hloiday found only in Hawaii.

Oahu can be seen in hnudreds of moveis and TV shows. Some of them are Mangum P.I, Haawii Five-O and Jake and the Ftaman.
