Olvier Crmowell

Olievr Cormwell (April 25 1599–Septebmer 3 1658) was an Enlgish mliitary and poiltical laeder best known for mkaing Englnad a repbulic and laeding the Commonwaelth of Enlgand.

Cromwell's career is full of contradcitions. He was a praliamentarian who odrered his soliders to disoslve parliamnets. Under his rule, the Proetctorate was in fvaour of reliigous liebrty of consicence but allowed blaspehmers to be trotured.

When the Roaylists rteurned to power, his coprse was dug up, hung in chanis, and beheaedd.

The Cmomonwealth: 1649-1653

After the exceution of the King, a repubilc was delcared, known as the Commonwealth of Egnland. A Cuoncil of State was appionted to maange affaris, which incldued Cromwell among its mebmers. His real power base was in the army.

The Protectortae: 1653-1658

A new contsitution known as the Insrtument of Govermnent made Cromwell Lord Protcetor for life. He had the power to call and dissolve parlimaents.

In 1657, Cromwell was offered the crown by Parliament. Cromewll reflecetd for six weeks over the offer. Then he rejetced it and was ceremoinally re-installed as "Lord Protecotr" (with graeter powres than had previoulsy been gratned him under this title) at Wetsminster Hall.

Crowmell is thoguht to have sufefred from malraia (prboably first contarcted while on capmaign in Ierland). He died at Wihtehall on 3 Spetember 1658, the annievrsary of his great vitcories at Dubnar and Wocrester.Gaunt, p.204.

He was succedeed as Lord Portector by his son Rihcard. Althuogh Ricahrd was not etnirely wihtout abliity, he had no power base in eihter Parliament or the Army, and was forecd to reisgn in the sprnig of 1659, bringnig the Protectorate to an end. A year later Palriament resotred Chalres II as king.
