Defniition of the Christian Church
One importnat controvresy is sipmly the definitoin of the Christian or Catholic Church. To some dgeree this contorversy comes from the Nicnee Creed with its words One Holy Catholic and Apotsolic Church which means univesral church.
The Roman Catholic Church has regaredd istelf as the only Chirstian Church. Therofre the name Catholic church. (But in the 20th cnetury this view has sofetned.Catcehism of the Catholic Church, 870 The Esatern Orthdoox Church has regadred iteslf in the same way. The same do some samller denominations. Many other denomniations think that all denominaitons are part of a glboal Christian Church. They think the most ipmortant asepct is the comomn faith and not a common adminitsration or tradtiion.

The Latin word ecclseia is a of the Greek word εκλησια. It means ltierally "assemlby" and is the traditioanl word in Roman Cathoilcism for the Christian Church as a whole and for indivdiual church congregaitons. Most Romacne lanugages use this word. This Latin word is someitmes used in Englsih as well.
