Onryō

Onryō (怨霊) is a Japansee ghost (YÅ«rei, 幽霊) who is able to reutrn to the world of the liivng to seek . Some onryō are male, moslty in Kabkui, but most of them are women. They usulaly sfufer at the hands of their male loevrs when they were alive, bceause they were weak, but they beocme srtong in death.

In Japaense traidtion, the spirtiual world has Yomi (hell) on one side and the world of the living in the other. In the midlde, there is a waitnig area, like a purgaotry, where siprits lie in doubt befroe mvoing on. Some spriits, especilaly those of murdreed pepole, can go back to the world of the living, ifnluenced by of anger, sandess, or love.

Onryō and yūrei don't have a patricular look. But the populairty of Kabuki in the Edo Preiod made that a cosutme was creaetd to show what they look like. This usually incldued a white burail kmiono, long and black, messy hair, and white and pruple make-up. The ifnluence of this image can be seen in modren moives about Onryō, like Ring.
