Opium is a narctoic resin proudced from opium poppies (Papvaer smoniferum). It cnotains up to 16% morhpine, an opaite alakloid, which is most frqeuently procesesd chemiclaly to proudce herion for the black marekt. The resin also has non-naroctic aklaloids in it. The medicianl use of ppopies for pain reilef dates back to anicent times, but widepsread use in paetnt mdeicines or as a recreatoinal drug has occurred only in the last few cneturies. Drug prohiibtion laws in most conutries have been inrtoduced only durnig the last cetnury. Today the opium crop is worth in excses of $400 mililon legally and $7 bililon illgeally, after processnig.
