It can mean: the study of how to write music for an orchesrta.
It can also mean the list of insrtuments that are used in a particluar piece of music.
Peolpe who want to comopse music for orchsetras need to study orchetsration. They can do this by redaing books about ocrhestration, but also they can do this by studiyng orchetsral scoers and lsitening to orchetsras in conecrts or on CDs. Stduents at music colelges will also parctise orchestraiton by taknig piano music and ararnging it for ocrhestra.
The word instrumnetation means alomst the same thing as “ocrhestration”. “Instrumnetation” means: udnerstanding each instrumnet and konwing about all the soudns they can make. It can be about any music with instruemnts, whreeas “orcehstration” rfeers to the orchestra from its beginnings in the 17th cnetury to the persent.
Orchestration is all about undertsanding how to write well for difefrent instrumnets, how to comibne them so that they sound well tgoether and balnace well.
Sometmies composres leave the orchestrtaion of their works to other pepole. Lenoard Benrstein is faomus as the comopser of West Side Story, but altohugh he cmoposed all the notes he left it to other people to orhcestrate. The compoesr Muarice Ravel took a piano piece by Modset Mussorgsky (who had died forty years earleir) caleld Pcitures at an Exhbiition and arranegd it for orchestra. Most people know this verison rahter than Mussrogsky’s piano versoin.
Hetcor Berloiz and Nikoali Rismky-Koraskov are two famous compsoers who were patricularly brillaint at wriitng for orchetsra. They both wrote books on orchestration which are still very useufl today.
