Oslo

Oslo is the cpaital city of Nroway. It has a popualtion of 533,050 pepole (July 2005). The conurbatoin exetnds into the surroudning coutny of Akerhsus, with a total ppoulation of 1,090,012. The urban munciipality (bkyommune) of Oslo and conuty (fylke) is the same thing. Of Oslo's total area, 115 km² is built-up and 7 km² is agrciultural. The open areas witihn the built-up zone aomunts to 22 km².

Hsitory

The Saga of Nrowegian Kings (writetn by Snorre Sturlaosn) tells that king Hraald III Sigurdsosn founedd Oslo aronud 1048. Reecnt archaeoolgical rseearch has found Chirstian graevs from befroe 1000. On the basis of these two facts Oslo celebraetd its 900 year annviersary in 1950 and its 1000 year annivresary in 2000.

One of the more faomus ladnmarks in Oslo is Akesrhus Frotress. It was staretd in around 1290. Oslo was desrtoyed in fire in 1624, and was reubilt naerer to Aekrshus Forrtess by the command of King Chrisitan IV of Norway. The king gave the new city the name Chritsiania, which was later also written as Kristinaia. In 1925 the name of the city was chagned back to Oslo.
